Client stories
Hospitality · café & catering, 8 staff

A café owner came to us eighteen months in — cash in the bank but no real picture of profitability, and BAS lodgements running weeks late. The business was using a shoe-box approach to receipts and had never reconciled its accounts end-to-end. We set up Xero from scratch, connected the POS system, and built a simple chart of accounts that actually reflected how the business ran. From there we caught up three quarters of outstanding BAS, negotiated a penalty remission with the ATO, and put in place a fortnightly bookkeeping routine. Within two reporting periods the owner had real-time visibility on margin by revenue stream. Tax time that year was the most straightforward it had ever been — not because the numbers were smaller, but because everything was ready before we asked for it.

Trades · electrical contracting, sole trader to company

An electrician running as a sole trader had grown turnover past the point where the structure stopped making sense. He was paying income tax at the top marginal rate on money he was reinvesting in tools and a van, with no separation between personal and business assets. We incorporated a company, set up a trust for income flexibility, and shifted the business into it cleanly — managing the timing of the changeover to avoid an unnecessary tax event. We then put in place quarterly BAS, annual tax planning, and a simple monthly report he reviews with us each quarter. The first year in the new structure reduced his effective tax rate materially. More importantly, he now understands the numbers and feels in control of his money rather than surprised by it every May.
